Summary
Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars - The Director's Cut starts with the player in control of charming Parisian photo-journalist Nicole Collard, who witnesses the brutal and horrifying murder of one of Paris's richest and most influential statesmen. During her investigations, which feature exclusive new locations, Nico meets amiable American George Stobbart, who has been unwittingly caught up in the sinister and bloody theft of an ancient manuscript. Together, they are drawn into a terrifying conspiracy rooted in a long-forgotten medieval legend. Expanding on the original classic storyline, The Director's Cut features tight scripting and an intense atmosphere from the explosive opening sequence to the gripping finale, where the full threat of the conspiracy is revealed. When the original game is so good, can a Director’s Cut spoil the experience? We still don’t know, because Broken Sword is a very solid Director’s Cut of an awesome Graphic Adventure. Developers could have gone the extra mile to smooth some rough edges off, but even so the mission is completely accomplished.

Still as delightfully charming and rewarding as it was when it was first released, the Director’s Cut of Broken Sword for the DS will not fail to amuse. If this is your first time playing the game then you will most definitely be surprised by its rich storytelling and fun puzzles. If it isn’t, you’ll be glad you played this one again.

The Director’s Cut is not only the return of one of the greatest exponents of "point and click adventure” but even is better than the original by a series of new puzzles, new phases of gameplay and new scenes. The music is very beautiful and sound effects play their work too, recreating a charming atmosphere. The only flaw is the little screen of the Nintendo DS that doesn’t allow us to appreciate all the graphic details.

Broken Sword is an excellent proof of concept. Yes, classic point-and-click adventures work very well on DS. It is also a funny, engaging game with a wide variety of puzzles, locations and characters. But it also spotlights the gameplay elements that adventure games of the 1990s could get wrong.

If you liked games like Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney andProfessor Layton, you're going to become very fond of this game. My impression was based on the GBA version, and from what I've played (I'm about 7 hours in) it's very close to the original (which I also give a 9) and is improved so much thats it feels fresh again. However, the game is starting to show its age (Just because it's fresh doesn't mean it's not old), seeing that this is a 13 year-old game. Either way, if you've never played a Broken Sword game, this is a great place to start. Also, Ir recommend the DS version over the Wii version because the voice acting is crinkly and it's very steep for such a short adventure, ESPECIALLY if you've played the original.
