Summary
As Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare's single player campaign unfolds, the player is introduced to new gameplay at every turn – one moment you are fast-roping from your Black Hawk helicopter after storming into the war zone with an armada of choppers, the next you are a sniper, under concealment, in a Ghillie suit miles behind enemy lines, the next you are engaging hostiles from an AC-130 gunship thousands of feet above the battlefield. Mixed with explosive action, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare also delivers special effects, including use of depth of field, rim-lighting, character self-shadowing, real time post-processing, texture streaming as well as physics-enabled effects. Infinity Ward deployed a dedicated team from the start to deliver a new level of depth to multiplayer. Building on the hit "Call of Duty 2" online experience, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare's new multiplayer provides the community an addictive and accessible experience to gamers of all levels. Start to finish, online or off, Call of Duty 4 is solid gold. Some might decry the single-player’s short length or that it’s more of the same, but its amazing quality and the Arcade mode...more than make up for it. Infinity Ward has delivered on every front, and there is no question in my mind that this is the best action shooter that I have ever played.

While the single-player campaign is outstanding in its own right, Call of Duty 4 contains one of the most addictive multiplayer modes we've ever played in a shooter.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare shows that you don’t have to revolutionize a series to invigorate it. The move to modern warfare has enabled Infinity Ward to deliver the most frantic, chaotic shooter ever.

Unless you absolutely have to have control over your teammates in the single player campaign, Call of Duty 4 really does have it all. It's epic, very difficult at higher levels and offers stunning visuals. Online, the ranking system is just as, if not more addictive than Halo 3's, and custom classes and abilities add another layer to each match.

Every objective feels fresh, and enjoyably chaotic, because more than anything, Modern Warfare illustrates the constant state of FUBAR that war often is.

For once a title has exceeded our expectations and some. It all goes without saying that if you want the best Call of Duty experience to date look no further than the forth in the illustrious series, it’s quite simply a corker.

An intense gaming experience from start to finish. The story is conveyed much better than the average FPS, the gameplay is varied enough to stay fresh, the graphics and sound both deliver, and the multiplayer is addictive.

With the possible exception of Crysis, CoD4 is the best-looking online shooter ever made, and fans of online shooters will absolutely adore this release.

Seldom do games combine top notch single player and multiplayer experiences, but truly Call of Duty 4 has done just that.

Call of Duty 4 offers an excellent gaming package with a thrilling campaign and addicting multiplayer action. It contains everything you would want in a FPS, and the game doesn't lack any polish, either.

All in all, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was one of the best FPS games that I’ve played in the last 5 years and hope that the designers can be enticed into additional single player campaigns or a quick release of the next game if not.

A completely intense thrill-ride from start to finish, Call of Duty 4 grabs hold of you and doesn’t let go.

Though the single-player lacks length, the multiplayer should keep you invested in COD4 for the long winter. This is a truly fantastic multiplayer offering that's as deep as any other online game available.

It’s absolutely relentless in its assault on the senses and never lets up until the last trigger has been squeezed. The multiplayer is even better, with the perks and weapon upgrades acting as a balance to the lack of vehicles.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Combat is easily the best game in the history of the franchise, at least from a technical standpoint. I didn’t find it nearly as immersive or personally rewarding as I did the previous WWII games where I actually came away having learned something, but that is the risk you take when you abandon history and delve into fiction.

Call of Duty 4 is a undoubtedly an important mark in the history of this genre and it will take something special in the future to compete with the powerful impression it makes on every player that comes into contact with it.

To experience it is to experience a conflicting mixture of belief and disbelief: belief at the immersive scenarios, rich detail and convincing acting, and disbelief at the jaw-dropping set pieces and hammer-to-the-head storytelling.

Call of Duty 4 is a great online shooter, and welcome competition to both Counter-Strike: Source and Battlefield 2. The single player campaign is everything you can expect from a Call of Duty game and then some.

While some developers develop for the console platforms and then hand off their PC port to other people, Infinity Ward holds onto their PC roots by handling this title personally. The result is a PC version that is as solid as its console counterparts, and we the gamer reap the benefits no matter which platform we choose.

It’s the best Call of Duty game so far and hopefully will spark other developers to follow suit by breaking out of the redundant World War II genre. It doesn’t matter what platform you get Call of Duty 4, all that matters is it deserves a spot in any action fan’s collection.

While many other games try for a Hollywood block-buster feel, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare pulls it off like no one else ever has and does so in great fashion.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare may be relatively short with just six to seven hours playing time, but thanks to the brilliant staging those hours are the most impressive ones we've experienced with any action game yet.

Call of Duty 4 is an exciting shooter package that represents the best of last-generation gameplay. [Jan 2008, p.70]
PC PowerPlay
It shows how a development team can tackle a new era with the techniques they’ve refined over the years, and rather than lose what made the originals so great, actually improve. [Jan 2008, p.47]
PC Format
A brilliant reinvention that may stick to First Person Shooter convention, but applies cutting-edge production values. [Jan 2008, p.58]
Gamers Europe
Call of Duty 4 is stunning. It has some of the best set pieces I have ever seen and gunplay that’s only rivaled by Crysis. A wealth of multiplayer options and an amusing arcade mode make this an almost flawless package.

If Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare had a longer single player campaign our score would have been even higher. As it stands Infinity Ward's latest game still is worth the money to buy and experience for yourself.

Call of Duty 4 is just like every other Call of Duty game, but in a radically different setting, and with an ounce of clever-dust sprinkled on top.

Moving the series to the present day was the right move but the structure of the single player game should also have been updated. Barging from one invincible checkpoint to the next throughout the whole campaign just isn’t good enough anymore. Still the 5 hours it takes to finish the game are intense and fun. The multiplayer part is a whole ‘nother ballgame. It’s fast and furious and the new weapons and skills that you’ll unlock by increasing your rank keep you addicted. [Dec 2007]
PC Gamer UK
A beautifully crafted first-person shooter, but without a compelling context. How much does that matter? To me, a little. Not a lot, but it nags. [Dec 2007, p.73]
My Gamer
Call of Duty 4 is a solid game that is easy to get into, but has enough content that most gamers will be able to find a lasting appeal for several months in the multiplayer arenas.
Infinity Ward has mastered a formula of its own making for both single- and multiplayer combat; Call of Duty 4 is louder, better looking, and more chaotic than ever. But it's certainly a formula, one that becomes more transparent with each version.

Chris R gave it a10:
This game has got to be one of the most addictively fun games I've ever played. I still spend hours on xbox live shooting through walls on hardcore team deathmatch. And for all u whiners who think that online sucks cuz of all the fags that exploit the games few weak spots, suck it up and learn to fight back. I'm not saying cheat back, but learn how to take care of the queers or just find another game. Contrary to your own belief, there are servers WITHOUT cheaters.
Tim J gave it a9:
This game is pure awesome all around. The graphics, the gameplay, the cinematic point of view are all just brilliant. Playing online is so much fun, I'm frequently stuck to my computer for hours owning it up with my golden AK. It's probably one of the best single player games I've ever played. The reason I give this game a 9 is that it's a wee bit too short, but the last mission is absolutely EPIC.
nightbringer gave it a4:
I give it a 4 simply because the terrible multi-player mode. not that the gameplay is bad, but the amount of cheating there makes it terrible. The single player mode i finished in 12 hours so only thing left is multi player mode and thats totaly messed up. You cant enter a server or there is 1 or more peeps using wall hacks, auto aim, rapid fire etc. so 50 Euros for a game that i finished in 12 hours and a cheating filled multi player mode is way over priced. The game looks great though, but a lot of games do...
John D gave it a9:
This is game is great in both single- and multiplayer, theres not much to add to what other people wrote. Just one thing to add from my side, MANY people - including me - have an unsolveable issue with the game locking the whole PC, only in multiplayer. There seems to be no solution for it, it happens on totally different PC configs no matter what drivers etc. you use. So for me the game is kind of unplayable with those lockups, sometimes they dont happen at all during 10 hours of playing, other times it happens twice in a row within 10 minutes.
uskoton gave it a10:
Forget Halo, Forget Counter Strike, Forget Battlefield. Call of Duty 4 is the best FPS available at present. It has recently won numerous awards to prove this fact. Best selling FPS for example. Single player is short but 'veteran' mode can extend that! Online it is unbeatable and highly addictive, be prepared to lose a lot of your life spent playing CoD 4 online! From Beginners to Hardcore shooting fans this game has something for everybody. Yes people complain its 'run and gun' but there is plently of MODS and Clans that play tatical games where teamwork and tatics are essential! This is as close to perfect i have ever experienced in a game and Call of Duty Modern Warefare 2 will have a hard time trying to out do this game!
R C gave it an8:
Graphics are ok I do have to agree with the person who said the texture are bad; they are, but still graphics are half way decent. Single player is fun, although short; it was great experience. Multiplayer can be bad depending on the players. A lot of times the teams are unbalanced so it's never a close game and it gets frustrating when you can't kill anyone because they camp or their too good. I'll give this an 8, I recommend buying it, but don;t expect anything amazing, it's just a good game.
b00tsy compton gave it an8:
Absolutely a great game. Graphics are stunning, all the buildings look great and the maps very divers. the only few down sides for me was that the frame rate at some moments is not very stable especialy when there is a lot of shooting going on against the enemies and in normal and easy mode you can finish the game within 15 hours, wich is not much for such a pricy game (50 Eu). And for me the multiplayer version is not working at all due to a download error with steam. other then that the game rocks, good AI, gameplay, graphics, etc.
