Summary
In AFRIKA, players step into the role of a freelance photographer exploring a brand new conservation area. They'll document the wildlife and photograph incredible sights such as a titanic clash between hippopotamuses, a pride of lions watching over its playful cubs, and a cheetah's lightning-fast chase as it runs down its prey! All of the game's animals and environments are rendered in photorealistic detail with animals that move, behave, and interact with each other just like their real-world counterparts. The photography in the game is as meticulously modeled as the animals themselves; players will need to learn from the game's innovative photo-grading system and compose their photographs with the eye of a professional photographer if they want to earn top dollar. The money they earn can be used to purchase new licensed lenses, cameras, and safari equipment. If players are good enough, they just might find their photograph on the cover of National Geographic. If you like the setting, then you will not be disappointed by Afrika. Relaxing as it is, we could watch the savannah‘s inhabitants for hours, so Afrika scores extra points for its atmosphere.

Worth a look for something unique but hippo-watching slower missions can frustrate. [Feb 2009, p.79]

Hakuna Matata is a unique title and as such will no doubt attract a cult following. There is a lot to offer those who can find the required time and patience required to gain the best from it.

An intriguing game, dedicated to nature lovers and photographer would-be. Unfortunately, some graphical issues spoil the atmosphere.

Afrika is one of the most pleasant, enjoyable and gently engrossing games I've played in a while. It's a shame Sony isn't releasing it here, and it's worth importing. [JPN Import]

If you like it quiet, Afrika's peacefulness and sense of freedom offer something to savour.[JPN Import; Nov 2008, p.116]

Approached with acceptance of its limitations and a willingness to cede true freedom, Afrika can still be a remarkable, memorable experience. [Dec 2008, p.121]

It's beautiful and soothing. [Nov 2009, p.76]

Originally, the biggest problem I had with Afrika was that there wasn't more of a narrative. I like having the freedom to explore beautiful virtual worlds, but I also appreciate some story to bring it together. But as the game progressed, I felt that maybe a game like this doesn't need a bunch of drama attached -- a picture is worth a thousand words.

It's not the visual jaw-dropper that was promised but a virtual safari is better than none.

For $49.99, it’s a definite pass; maybe when it drops down to budget price all you nature fans might give it a try. Just don’t expect much…at least it’s cheaper than a real safari.

Afrika is a mess. It's not a broken game, but it definitely isn't a fully functioning one. It's limited in its scope, it doesn't look good, it's not fun to play, and I could go on. This one is a miss that America probably could've done without.

Zoltan z. gave it a7:
Overall a nice package. Afrika viewer alone almost worths the price as an interactive screensaver with the excellent soundtrack. Online photo site is good, too. Using the binocular the animals are really nice and the backdrop is gorgeous.
The Nose gave it a3:
You take photographs of wild animals. Maybe that sounds good to some people, but for me was booooring.
Justin QR gave it a4:
NOT what I expected - and not in a good way. Limited freedom, animals looking like cardboard cutouts of themselves - the hype was way too exaggerated for this title.
