Summary

Providing gamers with the most authentic Ashes experience possible without having to don their whites, Ashes Cricket 2009 is fully licensed by the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board), the MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club, the world's most famous cricket club and owner of the Ashes urn) and Cricket Australia, providing the game with all the official players, kit, stadia - including Lord's and The Brit Oval - and equipment from this year’s npower Ashes Series. Coming from the home of video game cricket, Ashes Cricket 2009 is set to build on the heritage that Codemasters has enjoyed with its best-selling Brian Lara series and continue to lead the field with great batting, bowling and fielding gameplay and authenticity that made the series a huge hit with cricket fans the world over. Produced by Codemasters, the game is currently being developed by Transmission Games (Brian Lara 2007 Pressure Play (PSP)). Delivering all the exciting, athletic, skilful and technical elements of the sport, the game’s comprehensive ‘Ashes’ mode features all five Tests played out at carefully detailed recreations of each authentic venue. In addition, gamers can play Test matches, One Day Internationals, 20 over games and a series of challenge modes. The high definition current generation versions feature full online multiplayer as well as support for local multiplayer games. [Codemasters]

BigPond GameArena

Ashes Cricket 2009 is the best cricket game in 11 years. Not since Shane Warne 99 has the pitch captured my focus so well.

ImpulseGamer

In conclusion, Ashes Cricket 2009 is quite an impressive attempt at a cricket game and goes beyond the previous incarnations.

Its greatest success is in managing the balancing act between bowling and batting – a hurdle at which many cricket games fall, but one that’s deftly dealt with by developers Transmission.

Not the complete package, but still a very competent, challenging and enjoyable game of cricket.

Total Video Games

Even though there is a distinct lack of content on offer in the title, Ashes Cricket's gameplay depth more than makes up for these shortcomings and provides a gaming all-rounder in the process.

RealGamer

Ashes Cricket 2009 overall provides an excellent rendition of the much love game, and despite its flaws, offers a very good playing experience for both cricket fans and newcomers to the sport.

If you already love cricket, then you’ll absolutely devour everything Ashes 2009 has to offer, from full-on test matches (including The Ashes, obviously), one-day internationals and 20 over games.

IGN AU

What’s important here is that the core mechanics are well executed and there’s little doubt that they are. Ironically, the realistic feel robs the game of its excitement. We wouldn’t want to see Bigs style Turbo modes necessarily - that’s just not cricket - but something to crank the pace up just a little would have been great, particularly in single player mode.

Overall Satisfying cricketing action that lacks longevity once mastered.

VideoGamer

Ashes Cricket 2009 is a solid recreation of the sport and this summer's big sporting event, but it's lacking spark and feels a little slight in terms of depth.

Cricket and video games were hardly made for each other but this is Codemasters' best innings yet.

While it does have its shortcomings, Ashes Cricket 2009 manages to combine the strangely therapeutic properties of the sport with the intensity of one of the most storied events in sports history, and that is a feat that would have left many other developers well and truly stumped.

Bugs and glitches mar an otherwise fair attempt at bringing the gentleman's sport to consoles.

Gamestyle

Ashes Cricket 2009 is a surprisingly enjoyable cricketing experience. Codemasters and Transmission must look to the Indian Premier League and Twenty20 cricket for inspiration about how to galvanise their presentation and attract new fans to the game.

Playstation Official Magazine Australia

As a single player experience Ashes Cricket 2009 really isn’t worth it. If you have a readily available mate for on or offline play and a passion for the sport you might just be able to love the strengths of this game, rather than lament its weaknesses. [Sept 2009, p.84]

Boomtown

If you're desperate for a cricket game to play against friends, there is no better option. If however you're looking for a deep and rewarding single-player experience, where a Test and One day matches are clearly different to play, well again it's the best you can buy, but that doesn't make it an essential purchase.

Ashes Cricket 2009 is a decent effort, but one that falls short both by being too complex in its mechanics and too simplistic in its gameplay.

The subtleties real-life cricket offers lie so far out of view you'd need a telescope. Avoid. [Issue#183, p.78]

Cricket is back! Great game, easy to pick up & play yet hard to master on tougher difficulty.
