Fat Princess is a gem that's marred by some issues that would otherwise make it the best game on the PSN.

Fat Princess presents a captivating world, an absurd premise and classic gameplay in a very well balanced and original game that is both amazingly funny and fun to play.

This is without a doubt the most enjoyment I have had with an online-focused game in a long time and cannot wait to go back and play some more. There is something for everyone and it will not take you long to get accustomed to the controls and be essential on the battlefield. It might only be August, but what we have here is by far the best downloadable game of the year and one that should not be missed.

Fat Princess offers some of the most addictive and rewarding gameplay in recent times and can be a fantastic joy to play with friends online. Over time, it wouldn’t be at all surprising for Fat Princess to get better and better as players settle down into their roles and really engage with the teamwork – much like has happened in Killzone 2’s multiplayer.

Play Magazine

Either single player or online, Fat Princess delivers excellence in every way. The single player is quite short and should be looked at more like a tutorial for the very deep multiplayer aspect. If there were one thing I’d like to see added to Fat Princess it would be split-screen local multiplayer, other than that I can’t complain.

Fat Princess is more filling then the sweet magical icing that crowns the princess's favorite meal. Titian Studios has produced a fun, quick-paced strategy game that takes the classic formula of capture-the-flag and turns it into a violent, cheery pool of controlled chaos.

Giant Bomb

Despite its early growing pains, Fat Princess manages to walk a pretty straight path between frenzied combat and larger-scale tactics. It's a unique take on team-based multiplayer with a lot of personality and charm--and, with any luck, a lot of staying power on the PlayStation Network.

The multiplayer mode is the key, though. Without that, there isn't much here for a single player to enjoy. Playing against bots is okay, and the survival and (quite clever) soccer game are fun diversions, but nothing beats running around a map full of 32 real players.

The fundamental principles behind the gameplay and strategy in Fat Princess are quite ingenious: take up to 32 players and divide them into two teams. Let the members of these teams assume one of four classes (mage, warrior, worker, priest) and then let them use the unique characteristics of their chosen class to either infiltrate the enemy base to steal their princess or defend the home base. It's an addictive and thoroughly pleasing experience, if you find the proper teammates that is. Fat Princess ranges from a decent to a fantastic online experience.

The Onion (A.V. Club)

So the core design, which seems so elegant at first, leads either to quick decisions between teams of unmatched skill, or long slogs worthy of a Russian winter campaign. When the action drags on, the not-inconsiderable cute factor starts to wear away.

Ultimately, Fat Princess is a victim of its own focused creativity. It may have visual appeal and at first seem to offer a lot but it doesn’t take long to realise proceedings are rather dull; matches last a ridiculously long amount of time. In tiny bursts there’s definitely some appeal. It’s just ever so short. [Issue#183, p.80]

Fat Princess looks delicious and, in theory, provides enough depth with her action-, RTS- and RPG-elements. But the game centers around cooperative team-play, and that doesn't happen too often when you play with other people. Most matches end up in a free-for-all where tactics aren’t anywhere to be found. On top of that your AI-teammates are dumb, the game suffers from bugs and lag and the Mage-class is far too powerful. Fat Princess just didn't become the game we wanted it to be.

GameCritics

There is potential here, and with an expansion or some downloadable content, Fat Princess can easily become something worthwhile, but right now it ends up feeling more like a proof-of-concept than a fully-featured release.

What Our Users Said

The average user rating for this game is 8.8 (out of 10) based on 121 User Votes

Note: User votes are NOT included in the Metascore calculation.

souleatingginger gave it a10:
This game is great everything is pretty well balanced and awesome. the graphics are amazing and it has a tremendously high replay value. but if i were rating this game before titan fixed most of the problems then i would have given it a 9. ps to the person who said this game was only a cluster f*** u don't haveto go there. and to the person who thinks the game is broken ur an idiot and try playing the game now. Broccoli Crew Don't Lose!!!

Bryan L gave it an8:
In Fat Princess the graphics are cheerful and the mayhem is exciting, yet the game only deserves an 8 and not a 10 or even a 9 because of the team balancing issues already mentioned by other users. If you're anal about winning, than it is somewhat of a gamble to choose the quick match option because you will often find yourself on a losing team. Play with a group of friends or host your own matches to get the best experience out of the game, otherwise you'll be left with disappointment wishing for a refund.

Frank R gave it an8:
Easy with the 10's, kids. This game IS a blast to play online (while the offline mode leaves much to be desired), but it has blatant balancing issues. A team of 3 humans and 13 bots against 10 humans and six bots is absolutely NOT a fair match up - especially when the bots have the reasoning skills of a rock. When they give us an auto-balancing patch so the matches are always even, then I'll consider it a 9. But until then, this is a B- grade at best.

fat princess gave it a9:
While I had some fun playing with the cute little graphics and story line, the darn little computer players on your team just do whatever they want, so when you really want to upgrade something, you might have to wait the whole game, but otherwise this was a fun and enjoyable game, and while it was short, the replay value was very high... I expect a sequel.

josh j gave it a10:
Pure mindless fun with great artwork and fun matches. If this is an early taste of MAG like an other commenter said, MAG is going be awesome. Why? Because Fat Princess is most likely the best downloadable game i have ever played.

John M. gave it a0:
The game is broken. The gameplay is not thought trough. This game needed another year or so to be fixed. I cannot even get my money back on PSN for this pos.

Joe M gave it a9:
The first time playing Fat Princess I didn't like it much as i thought it was slightly confusing to me but after spending some time with her I realized how awesome this game is. The online play is awesome. It is lots of fun & very funny... Baby Got Back!
