IGN
This is an arcade-style game through and through, and a short one. Expect a few thrills once you acclimate to the controls, but don't expect to stick around for very long.

The overall lack of complexity and repetitive nature of the gameplay will seriously reduce the time you'll spend playing this game. It shouldn't take you longer than a weekend to win this war.

More than anything, the PSP version of IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey is a surprise. [Holiday 2009, p.85]

Niki D D gave it a2:
I've been playing it for about 1 week now and while it is entertaining, the graphics are very mediocre and the playability is somewhat lame. Don't get me wrong, IL-2 for the PC is one of my favorite flight sims to thisday. I still hook up my flight stick and battle once and a while. Ace Combat X, IMHO, blows IL-2 for the PSP away. Talk about 'arcade-like'? IL-2 for the PSP is like a mid-80's WW2 arcade shooter. Come on guys...couldn't you have been a bit more creative and given this game some real teeth? The game doesn't have nearly the amount of depth I would have hoped and it quickly becomes repetitive and boring. Did I mention how much the graphics disappoint? LAME! Whatever screenshot and video being shown on the web currently are clearly from the PS3 or XBOX versions of the game. I can easily see this title collecting dust in my collection in no time or better yet, I might just unload it on ebay now that I've finished it.
DJ N gave it a3:
The whole package was a mess. Graphically inadequate, even when compared to other PSP flight games. The controls had one setting. There was no option to customize anything but the pitch up/down. They completely took out yaw control. Controlling the plane just felt slippery. There were no checkpoints mid-mission to reload from, so if you collided with an enemy plane, you get to start over. That last one I could allow in a sim, but this game WASN'T EVEN CLOSE to a simulation. If you want a good flight game for the PSP, buy Ace Combat X. Otherwise, DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT BUY THIS GAME! It only encourages developers to make shoddy games, and we need them to work harder to make GOOD ones.
