Summary

We find Gabe Logan once again using a combination of stealth and "run-and-gun" gameplay as he is called into action when a dangerous new technology is hijacked by a criminal extremist group. In a story that takes him from the depths of the Indian Ocean to the deserts of the Middle East, Gabe is faced with the possibility that his long time partner, Lian Xing is a double agent. Logan's Shadow is complete with a variety of combat mechanics including the ability to force enemies into cover with "blind-fire", an advanced melee system that allows Gabe to use enemies as human shields, and 360 degree underwater combat. For the first time in the franchise "interactive moments" have been added for increased player interaction, such as airlifting debris and escaping wrist restraints. Returning to the franchise are buddy missions which have been enhanced with a variety of new objectives. [SCEA]

Gaming Age

Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow neither looks nor plays like your typical “handheld” game, and it seriously pushes the limits of what the PSP and portable games in general can achieve. Hell, you’re lucky to find a console game so well put together overall.

If you played through Dark Mirror and hated every second of it then Logan's Shadow will give you the exact same feelings. If you have good taste however and liked Dark Mirror, even a tiny bit, then you simply must play Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow. With extravagant production values and gorgeous graphics, your eyes will adore it.

Dark Mirror was an incredible title that showed off the PSP, but Logan's Shadow elevates the story, gameplay and multiplayer elements to new heights. Not only does it keep the formula that made the first game so good, it smoothly improves on it.

The complicated control scheme will undoubtedly be a sore spot for some gamers and to compensate, the enemy AI is dumbed down a little. Still, as far as stealth action games on the PSP go, it doesn't get any better than this.

Game Informer

Syphon Filter manages to deliver a very enjoyable third-person shooting experience like few other PSP titles. I’m not a fan of using the face buttons for aiming, but this game’s pace – most scenarios revolve around advancing towards cover, eliminating the targets, then advancing again – is more suited to this configuration than more frantic action titles. I also like the new advanced grappling, stealth kill features, and brief God of War-style button mashing sequences.

Once again, it’s apparent that Syphon Filter and the PSP were made for each other. While the game isn’t without its issues, it’s still a solid action title that actually feels at home on the handheld. Action fans with a PSP should consider this a must-have.

To be honest, Dark Mirror was so good that Sony Bend could have got away with slapping a fresh story and some new levels around the same engine and been done with it.

Worth Playing

Without a doubt, Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow is one of PSP's top titles this year. It's beautiful, action-packed and, most importantly, fun. It's far from perfect — controls being the most troublesome issue — but its flaws hardly ruin what is, on the whole, a very good game.

A great sequel and a great action game for the PSP. Even though there aren’t a lot of new ideas, most of them are very well implemented. This second game on the PSP consummates the redemption of an old franchise and of Gabriel Logan as a lead character. [Dec 2007]

Graphically Syphon Filter is impressive and the musical score is utterly fantastic, though unfortunately the voice-over work features more racially stereotypical accents than your average mobile phone ring-tone advert.

Total Video Games

An evolution and refinement of 2006's offerings, Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow is an engaging adventure while it lasts, with a storyline deserving of a home console release let alone a handheld. Like its predecessor the game offers enough in the Campaign and multiplayer to keep players occupied, though the niggling AI can pull gamers out of the experience all too readily, dampening down an otherwise solid addition to the PSP's library.

Logan's Shadow, like "Dark Mirror" before it, doesn't quite stack up to the better Metal Gears and Splinter Cells, but it's absolutely worth a look for stealth-action fans yearning for something to tide them over this year.

If you can master Logan's Shadow's complexities, you're in for the most rewarding stealth combat experience available on the PSP. But it's a game that demands a lot from its players, and the PSP is just not a good fit for a game with such an elaborate control scheme.

Logan’s Shadow has a number of unique little moments, like tossing taser darts around a corner or pushing a merc into a stove, that make up a fun, portable adventure. I do hope Gabe lightens up a little at some point, but if you still need a gift for some special PSP owner, Logan’s Shadow is a top-notch stocking stuffer.

Roman T. gave it a9:
This is definitely one of the best titles to grace the PSP. An almost perfect action/shooter game in every way. Some of the things I really liked: controls, graphics, sound effects, comical ragdoll physics, level design, and the overall presentation. Unfortunately, there were some negatives: uninspiring storyline, poor collision detection when using a sniper rifle (even though game uses Havok physics), the game does not take full advantage of what the physics engine is capable off; including some physics based puzzle elements would have been a big plus; almost a complete lack of interesting boss battles; the button mashing QTE sequences are pretty unnecessary or could've been replaced with some nice scripted cut-scene events; there should've been more levels where a player had to be stealthy to keep things more interesting and balanced. Other than those few issues, this is an easily recommendable game. Enjoy.

Barry M. gave it a10:
This game is as good if not better then Dark Mirror. The button control is very accurate as is the weapon feel. Story is engrossing and is very enjoyable. I hope that Sony comes out with more games like this that work on the PSP.

One of the best games for the PSP. Reminds me a lot of the first Metal Gear Solid in that you can use stealth and force. Great graphics and gameplay. The underwater levels are incredible. With over 20 levels, this game lasts as well. Add the fun multiplayer (which is shockingly good) and you have the game of the year for the PSP. Truly cinematic gaming on the go.

Randy S. gave it a9:
It is won of the hottest games on psp ( even if most of the games on psp is wack) the first game was good and this one is better, than the first!!!!
