Summary

Halo 3 is the third game in the Halo Trilogy and provides the thrilling conclusion to the events begun in "Halo: Combat Evolved." Halo 3 picks up where "Halo 2" left off. The Master Chief is returning to Earth to finish the fight. The Covenant occupation of Earth has uncovered a massive and ancient object beneath the African sands - an object who's secrets have yet to be revealed. Earth's forces are battered and beaten. The Master Chief's AI companion Cortana is still trapped in the clutches of the Gravemind - a horrifying Flood intelligence, and a civil war is raging in the heart of the Covenant. This is how the world ends... [Bungie]

The Forge is a gargantuan achievement that puts game design in the hands of players, daring you to be creative and invent a Halo 3 multiplayer experience all your own. Of course, the multiplayer is every bit as astonishing as it has been in past iterations and even eclipses its predecessors in many respects.

The best game yet in one of the best FPS franchises of the era. Better than either of its predecessors, Halo 3 still can't quite escape the category of flawed masterpiece - but this time around, the flaws are so minor that even the most churlish of reviewers would be hard pressed to mark the game down.

The single player is bigger and brawnier than anything that's been attempted on a console before. The multiplayer, which already shadowed the competition, has improved to the point of ridiculousness. The new features - Forge, Saved Films, Coop - are frighteningly addictive. And if you don't like any of that, you're always welcome to edit it until you do.

It's hard to imagine a feature of this game that someone won't love... Sure, no one aspect of the game is life-changing on its own, but perhaps the package as a whole is. After all, Halo 3 has enough content to keep you stuck to your controller for weeks, if not months or even years.

Halo 3 transcends video games. It is a global entertainment experience. Just as "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" and "Spiderman 3" brought to a close two of the most lucrative and epic film trilogies of all time, Halo 3 brings to a close perhaps the most complete, engaging and downright fun video game trilogy of all time. There is absolutely no way any Halo fan will be disappointed by this game.

It's well-tested, well-honed, and polished--all qualities you'd expect from Bungie, but the developer's talented and hard-working team shouldn't be taken for granted. Halo 3 may look OK and play similarly, but it will stand in the top echelon of Xbox 360 games for years.

My mind is blown. Every level brings new and different scenery...and the scale of it makes "Halo 2" look both limited and amateur by comparison. I'm not exaggerating when I say that Halo 3 takes on "Half-Life 2" and wipes the floor with it.

Worth Playing

Between the ability to come up with your own bizarre custom modes and the theater mode, which records damn near everything you do with crystal clarity and allows you to play it back from multiple points of view, the worst thing you can say about Halo 3 multiplayer is that it’s going to force you to buy an Elite 360 just for the sake of having more hard drive space.

The campaign, which is very good, is Halo 3's weakest point. It doesn't capture the cavalier spirit of the original Halo, but you'll still have fun playing through it. There's no first-person shooter on 360 that can equal Halo 3's blend of cinematic action, adrenaline-pumping shootouts, and male- (and female)-bonding gameplay. Look beyond the gameplay and you have a rich feature set unlike anything ever delivered in a videogame.

Halo was remarkable in the ambition and innovation that made it so fresh, but the mighty number three doesn't have quite that same freshness - instead, it has a reassuring maturity to it, crafted as it is by a team who have learned from every mistake they've made and every word of feedback the community has offered over the years. The game's end sequence, to put it mildly, is an eight-car pileup. Fans of the series will recognize it as a poorly veiled swipe of a sequence in the original Halo, a challenge highlighted by a series of goofy circumstances and improbable level design meant to create an explosive end. There’s no denying how awesome the replay and Forge features are – but they’re not the core of the game. Don’t get me wrong, the single player campaign is very strong, the action is tight, and the AI is F.E.A.R.-killing. But for every positive, there was an area of the game that left me wanting more – the backtracking, the overly cheesy storyline, the underwhelming visuals. The single player campaign is not anywhere near as compelling or as epic as is billed. Anyone new to Halo probably won't see what all the fuss is about, completely confused as to why this third installment is so important to so many people. Another disappointment is the often-clumsy ally AI. While the enemy units display proficient level intelligence, your marine companions often struggle to cope with the enemy onslaught. Joshwa R gave it an8:
It's not great but it is very good. With some minor bugs in the multiplayer, and even some in the single player it makes for a good youtube game. But those are minor and oftentimes hilarious and easy to overlook. The multiplayer is great but the Exp system could use a ton of improvement. I dont want a CoD 4 look-alike but some aspects would be nice. The campaign was pretty cool at some parts but very fogettable at others. The map packs and the Double Experience weekend keep me comming back for more. One Major problem though is that the Xbox 360 does not like halo 3 at all. I know three friends whose disks were sratched by thier console and no other games were affected. This is what deprived halo 3 of a nine.

Micah H gave it a9:
Campaign can get old after a while, but first time you play it is a blast. Especially after waiting 3 years from the 2nd game. The multiplayer is where it really shines though. Forge and Custom games are the best customizable multiplayer experiance in gaming. Plus the matchmaking is brilliant and extremely fun. Just straight addicting. It actually takes skil to play, as compared to Call of Duty games(which I am a fan of) where you just run around until you see an unaware victim and you shoot him before he has a chance to think.

Chris S gave it a10:
The best game in the Halo trilogy. Everything in Halo 3 works really well. Forge and Theater are a spectacular addition to the Halo series. The games story is fantastick and surprised me atleast three times. The campaign is short but adds extra replayability with meta games, skulls, easter eggs and meta games. Multiplayer is superb but might be a little too competitive for some people tastes. Overall Halo 3 is a deffinite must buy title and is one of the XBox's best games. Halo 3 is a classic just like Bioshock, Gears of War, Oblivion or GTA 4.

I decided to comment because of Peter A's deluded comments that were near the top of this list. His first complaint was with the lack of graphical improvements over Halo 2. I can assure you the graphics for Halo 3 have been refined extremely. Certainly, it uses the same engine, but play Halo 3 and then play Halo 2, and you will see amazing differences. His second complaint was that the multiplayer was too similar to Halo 2's multiplayer, which is funny to me because one of the single largest complaints in the Bungie community is regarding how DIFFERENT Halo 3's multiplayer is from Halo 2's. Certainly, they are based on the same premises and rules. However, the subtleties and dynamics have been altered dramatically. He references the sudden appearance of powerups, which have actually be a Halo staple since Halo: CE, which, if you'll recall, is the very first Halo game. That right there should be reason enough to have his comment removed and his vote disqualified. He obviously has no idea what game he's playing. As for adding Forge to Halo 2, it's not quite that simple. And it astounds me he didn't mention the theater mode, which is a milemarker in game development. I've also seen no mention of the depth to which the game is integrated with Bungie.Net. The bottom line is that I'm still playing this game almost daily two years after its launch. So are almost 1 million other gamers. That very fact that proves the longevity and replayablility of this game warrants a 9, in my opinion. The game isn't perfect, but it does what it does very well. And it's significant to the industry in terms of development.

Forge was a great addition to the game. So, if you don't like the normal multiplayer maps, you could edit them into all different kinds of things, like racing maps, a maze map for Infection, and a lot of different things. Now, I admit, it's not perfect, like, for one thing, how they don't turn off Friendly Fire for the normal gametypes. I prefer it over the other two of the top three shooters because you can take a hit from most of the weapons and not die before it's physically possible to react, and it doesn't have a boring color scheme. Adding all those options to the gametype editing was a good choice, too. So that if we want to play a team game with some of our friends, we can maybe increase the speed and lower the gravity and jump across the map, or turn off friendly fire, and having regenerating grenades and spawn with random weapons. If you don't like the main gameplay, there's always an alternate way to have fun without messing other people's chances of winning up.

I gave Halo 3 a six because it is mediocre at best. It is any other shooter, with aliens. I must admit, It has a damn good story, but It is only implemented in objectives, it doesn't make you feel like you are there. It is only good when bored and sick (only time I play it).

Theres nothing special about this game at all. its not on par with previous halo games. even the graphics are lacking for a game on a next gen console. there isn't a whole lot of variety and multiplayer is just generic shooter, it doesn't stand out with anything special at all.
