80
Billboard
While it's still age-appropriate for minors, Breakout is for the big kids too.

75
Entertainment Weekly
After all this fun, Breakout's second half gets overly ballad-heavy--guess that's where the growing up factors in--although, impressively, she's a dead ringer for the Dixie Chicks' Natalie Maines on the mournful 'These Four Walls.'

75
Los Angeles Times
Breakout is unlikely fodder for the razzle-dazzle road shows and 3-D concert films to come. As a portrait of the artist as a young malcontent, though, it's rarely less than fascinating.

70
Village Voice
The only thing Britney ever did better was cut loose, and even through Breakout's title suggests both a debutante's cotillion (leaving Disneyland and entering the airwaves) and an emotional liberation, Miley often sounds held-back and controlled.

All Music Guide
While Breakout isn't as much of a breakthrough as it could be, it still moves Miley closer to an identity and career outside of Hannah.

Boston Globe
With Breakout, Cyrus has clearly made a choice to break from the shiny, happy "Hannah Montana" character, but she hasn't scuffed her sound up so much that her fans won't recognize that she's just being Miley.

70
Rolling Stone
With Breakout, Disney's queen bee finally has a sophisticated pop record under her own name, and she's venting the frustrations of a teen who's too grown-up to submit to her parents, teachers or anyone else.

Dot Music
On closer inspection, it's clear Cyrus is hell-bent on stepping out of that pop princess territory--but only just.

The Phoenix
Breakout is a puzzling mishmash that makes sense only if you read between the lines and see the 15-year-old trapped in a machine that is partly of her own design.

Q Magazine
Harmless fluff. [Nov 2008, p.114]
50
Hartford Courant
While the slow-into-snappy single '7 Things' is an obvious attempt at a follow-up, and although much of the disc tends toward the same mildly punky pop (much of it co-written by Cyrus), there's an unwelcome familiarity to the hooks, a sense that Breakout is actually just a mash-up of moves tried and discarded by Lohan/Duff/fill-in-the-Disney-diva-of-your choice.

PopMatters
My guess is that Breakout isn’t fun enough or accomplished enough to really excite any segment of her fan base; rather, it’s just enjoyable enough and shows just enough flashes of maturation and skill to halt doubts regarding Cyrus’s future in the entertainment industry.

Slant Magazine
For teen-pop (despite what Annie Leibovitz would have us believe, Miley is only 15, after all), your kid could do worse.

The New York Times
It’s a lackluster album, floated by two or three strong singles.

Gabby G. gave it a9:
Yes this is still generally teen pop, but if you ask me she sounds much older and mature in this album. Theres a variety of sounds, and good ones none-the-less.

Steve O gave it a0:
I really, really thought about maybe giving this a one... it just doesn't deserve it. Maybe if you're a 12 or 13 year old girl you'll appreciate this... but just maybe.

Prudence K. gave it a10:
The crown jewel of a fine year in music. Cyrus has proven to stand out with the great ones, like The Beatles, The Velvet Underground, and Joanna Newsom. This is an important album, as much as it is eternally listenable. A true testament to the perseverance of the soul. Prepare to be moved.

Rob K. gave it a0:
As Comic Book Guy would say:Worst Album Ever! She's even worse than Souja Boy. Don't buy the album, the only people who would buy it is the Disney Whore Fangirls. This Disney Whore don't have talent at all. She's the worst Disney Whore,so far since Britney Spears started it.

Craig C. gave it an8:
Miley's unique, raspy voice stands out best on Bottom of the Ocean and These Four Walls. The remaining songs are fun and showcase her song writing ability. Quite an album for a 15 y.o.

Emily R. gave it a9:
This was a good C.D. .. VERY grown up fly on the wall especially the only thing was , was all the songs.. well almost sounded like break-up songs and it kinda got annoying cause can she write one about not breakups ..(i know she did but ) All in all a GREAT C.D.
