Summary
RATING: R for violence
Starring James Caviezel, John Hurt, Ron Perlman, and Sophia Myles
Outlander begins when a space craft crashes into the majestic fjords of ancient Norway and into the time of the Vikings. From the wreckage emerge two bitter enemies: a soldier from another world – Kainan – and a bloodthirsty creature known as the Moorwen. Man and monster both seeking revenge for violence committed against them. As the Moorwen ravages the Viking world, killing everything in its path, Kainan forms an unlikely alliance with the primitive but fierce warriors. Combining his advanced technology with ancient Iron Age weapons, the hero leads a desperate attempt to kill the monster - before it destroys them all. (The Weinstein Company)

The Hollywood Reporter Ray Bennett
It's entertaining nonsense with major league special effects, larger-than-life characters and inventive monsters that draw on the "Aliens" and "Predator" models, being terrifying but also vaguely sympathetic.

Surprise number one: It's smarter than it looks. Surprise number two: That doesn't entirely ruin it as an action film.

An enjoyably goofy hybrid of extraterrestrial sci-fi and Iron Age action, Outlander boasts a super-serious Jim Caviezel in the title role

If only Outlander was as fun as the premise makes it sound on paper.

Not helped by a wooden perf from Jim Caviezel as a humanoid alien who accidentally imports a real alien to eighth-century Earth.

Outlander is interesting as a collision of genres: the monster movie meets the Viking saga. You have to give it credit for carrying that premise to its ultimate (if not logical) conclusion.

By taking nonsense seriously Outlander never achieves camp. It's a comic book that's mistaken itself for scripture.

There isn't a single scene in this story about a traveler from another planet (Jim Caviezel) who crash-lands on Earth during the Iron Age that doesn't remind you of another, better movie.

In its second half, Outlander falls apart completely, becoming nothing but a violent, mindless monster movie along the lines of "Alien vs. Predator."

Writer-director Howard McCain bids fair to dethrone Uwe Boll as the king of crap action flicks, and every second feels like time on the cross.

Corey S gave it a7:
Definitely better than the critics who blasted it. The second half is not upper crust cinema, but it is very entertaining, has a fun plot, good mix of action and at least some character development. Good action film.
Stu C gave it a5:
I really wanted to like this movie. I mean Vikings and Aliens and Alien monsters, what more could you want, right? But it was mediocre at best. I just lacked in the effects and script. More appropriate for the SciFi Channel and their B movie repertoire. Maybe it's a B+ movie...but still in the B movie sphere.
Martin S gave it an8:
Very nice movie indeed. The 13th Warrior meets Predator. What else do you need for a good action flick? :)
Jesse D gave it an8:
The costumes were lame and un-authentic, and all of Patrick Tatopolous' monster designs look exactly the same. Otherwise, it was a good and fun romp, better than expected.
R M gave it a10:
We had never heard of this movie and I'm not sure what the critics are talking about. We just watched it. It was a great sci-fi action movie. We would definately watch it again.
R P gave it a10:
I had not heard about this movie prior to seeing it so I did have low expectations. However I thought it was really good. I mean its not a sophisticated drama, its a sci-fi fantasy action movie so don't expect anything else. One of the best things is the decent level of authenticity in the costumes and characters. There isent any juiced up bodybuilders on the cast which just makes it more believable.
Jay H gave it a5:
The film has some wonderfully imaginative sequences, good special effects, but the mixing of sci-fi and vikings is a disaster. The score is a bit overdone. Midway through the film falls apart by becoming much more conventional. An interesting premise gone awry.
